Kathy Giori

Qualcomm Atheros
Sr Product Manager
San Jose, CA

Kathy Giori is a senior product manager in the Wired/Wireless Infrastructure & Networking (WIN) business unit of Qualcomm Atheros (QCA). She has been pushing engineering to more proactively embrace upstream Linux kernel and driver development for several years. She also drove a paradigm shift for QCA’s software development kit, changing the delivery of software platform releases to adopt OpenWrt as the baseline embedded Linux distribution. This strategy enables the “smart router” platform vision (add and subtract functionality with ease) while also enabling customers to get products to market faster.

Prior to Qualcomm, Kathy was VP product management at Sputnik, Inc. an SaaS provider of Wi-Fi hot spot solutions; director of system integration at SkyPilot, Inc., a wireless mesh networking company acquired by Trilliant; CEO of WorkSpot, Inc., a startup she co-founded to build “your desktop on the net” suite of services, taking advantage of Linux, Apache, PostrgreSQL, VNC, and other successful open source projects; senior engineering manager at Etak, Inc., where she managed an R&D project to capture real-time traffic incidents into a database for geo-location-based distribution; and senior research engineer at SRI International, where she studied atmospheric electrification to improve NASA/Air Force launch safety, and mitigation of electrostatic discharge on new satellite dielectric materials.

She obtained her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at the University of Minnesota, and her master’s at Stanford University, with an emphasis on the study of the electromagnetics (ionosphere, magnetosphere, solar winds) of outer space.

Kathy has found that many people misunderstand the value and benefits of open source software development. Fortunately, the success of new fully open source software (FOSS) and upstream Linux initiatives at Qualcomm is winning people over.
